Study Finds Elephants Can Differentiate Between Human Languages

It is often said that an elephant never forgets particularly when it hears the approach of a potential predator. Scientists until now have not been aware about how finely tuned the hearing of an elephant is until researchers tried to find out whether pachyderms could tell the difference between different sets of humans.

It is well known that elephants possess great intelligence and can distinguish between different sexes, ages and even ethnicities in human voices.

Chimpanzee Outperforms Humans In Maze Simulation

A 22 year old female chimpanzee has outperformed 4 adults and 12 children on a complex task in a simulated virtual reality maze.

Researchers studying intelligence pitted four mature chimps against twelve human kids aged between 3 and 12 years old as well as four adult human beings. Most of the chimps averaged the same score as the children aged between 3 and 6 and completed the maze in roughly the same amount of time. Panzee the 22 year old chimp was most successful in the travel efficiency metric which measures how much distance is covered before completing the maze. Panzee took a significantly shorter route completing the maze beating both the kids and adults.

Sumatran Tiger Gives Birth To Triplets At London Zoo

A rare and endangered Sumatran tiger kept at London Zoo has given birth to triplets. Melati a five year old Sumatran tigress became a mother on Monday afternoon and whilst the keepers are maintaining and eye on the cubs through remote camera technology, the cubs have yet to be sexed.

According to new research the Asian elephant reassures distressed comrades by talking and touching them which suggests the elephant is capable of both empathy and reassurance.

Josh Plotnik who researches elephant behavior says that over half a century of observational data suggests elephants are highly social, can think about their relationships, display empathy and make social decisions. Mr. Plotnik of the University of Cambridge says the study in Thailand confirmed this for the first time.

Prince William AKA the Duke of Cambridge wants the royal collection of ivory which is stored in Buckingham Palace to be removed and destroyed according to reports.

According to a newspaper report in the Independent, Prince William is backing an anti elephant poaching and told expert Jane Goodall that he would “like to see all the ivory owned by Buckingham Palace destroyed”.

Aspinall Foundation Pleased To Announce Birth Of New Gorilla

The Aspinall Foundation is pleased to announce the birth of a western lowland gorilla at its conservation project in Africa.

The baby gorilla arrived on January 7th at the Aspinall Foundation’s Gabon gorilla reserve. This is the second such birth at the reserve and is a great sign for the species which is critically endangered.
